Compost comes from organic waste that was once alive or from living things and eventually breaks down into valuable fertilizer that can enrich soil and plants
Compost is generally made of food scraps, inedible portions of foods (eggshells, orange peels, fruit cores), or yard trimming

If we throw food scraps and other organic rubbish into the trash, it will end up in a landfill that does not get the air needed to decompose to nutrients. Instead, it releases methane
- which is extremely flammable and can cause fires on the landfill site
- warms up the atmosphere leading to climate change

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suggests the "brown, green and water" elements while we try to make efficient compost
- Browns: materials such as dead leaves, braches and twigs
- Greens: materials such as grass clippings, veggie waste, fruit scraps and coffee grounds
- Water: to ensure moisture of the compost

👨‍🌾 EPA suggests that a compost pile should have an equal amount of browns and greens, and it is preferred if layers of organic materials of different-sized particles are alternated. The brown provides carbon for compost, and the green provides nitrogen, while the water provides moisture to help break down the organic matter
